Acting Update~

“She’s rigorous, stringent, and challenging in her thinking.  She’s completely open to free association, but she has an analytical mind that is coupled with an enormous imagination, which is unusual.  (She) is spacious in her imagination and yet clinical in her approach to the material.  She asks questions- of herself, of the character, of the scene, of the director-and she doesn’t assume she knows the answer.  She’s looking around for something, and it’s not about her; it’s not about power or the clash of egos.  It’s about the clash of ideas…”

Personal body challenges, like #5toFit, always inspire deep personal and professional reflection. In focusing on tackling my diet and fitness regime (and not socializing), I have spent a lot of time ‘with myself’. I could write a book about the myriad thoughts and emotions that have been assaulting me, and I’ve been thinking deeply about the different aspects that comprise my creative life, especially as I see a paradigm shift on the horizon.  Even though acting has somewhat taken a back seat to my writing endeavors these days, it is still paramount in my life, especially as the journey (both inner and outer) to become an actor is the reason I am who I am today.

I am excited to have been cast in two different projects shooting in the next month- an exciting new digital series and a film.  I also have a Black Box TV episode coming out on Halloween which I’m very proud of (and director Joe Nation should be too); I play a very real, unglamorous character. I feel quite vulnerable watching myself in the rough cut.  So in prepping for my shoot next week and thinking about the actor’s journey, I’ve been pulling out old quotes that both move and ground me. The above is one of my favorites.

You are a critical thinker with a vast imagination, right? You can also focus on the ideas, not the egos, and admit that you don’t know the answer, no?  John Patrick Shanley may be referring to Meryl Streep in the quote, but it can refer to you to too.  Which is what I remind myself.

Be back soon with a fitness update!
